Vazhathandu pachadi or raita...

I never had vazhathandu pachadi till very recently at my friends place. I somehow have been refraining to try vazhanthandu recipes .... never tried any. It has a bundle of health benefits which will sure convince you to add it to your menu every once in a while. It is very easy to make and also so simple and tasty to add up to your regular meals. I have specially fallen in love with this raita/pachadi. Quick to make and healthy to the core is the speciality that I am talking about here

Serves... 4 ppl
Serve option... Cold or Room Temp

This is what u'll need...

Vazhathandu / Banana Stem
Curd
Mustard seeds - 1/2 tspn
Broken Urad Dal - 1/2 tspn
Oil - 2 tspn
Curry leaves - few
Green chilly - 2
Salt to taste

Here is the stir....
  • Heat oil in a pan. When hot enough add mustard seeds and broken urad dal to the oil
  • When mustard seeds start to splutter add 2 slit green chillies and few curry leaves
  • Remove the thick outer layer from the stem which is not edible.. Inside that the long tube like part is the one we are interested in
  • Cut the stem into circles. When you cut out a circle you will see the fibre coming out. Just use your fingers to remove the fibre. Chop them into small pieces and keep them soaked in water till ready to use else they will start to darken
  • Add this to the pan and toss it for just a few seconds. Turn off the flame immediately

  • In a separate bowl spoon in required amount of curd
  • Add salt as per taste and give it a good stir
  • Add the banana stem mixture to the curd and give it one final stir
  • Serve for lunch along with meals and enjoy

                                  Note:
                                  • Keep the chopped banana stem soaked in water to keep it fresh
                                  • Dont cook the banana stem for long just add it to the pan and just stir it for about 10 seconds
                                  • Dont forget to remove the fibre before chopping the banana stem
