Besan Bread toast ... a lovely snack

Bread is a very important part of our lifestyle. There are countless recipes to make with bread as the basic ingredient. We love it in so many ways. Mix a few ingredients n veggies together, top them on bread slices or sandwich them or roll them in bread and yes a new fancy delightful recipe is in front of you. Try using whole bread for better health and improved nutritional value

We love bread but we dont like having it the same way every other time. So I keep looking for new ways to make even though I have a bundle of recipes that run through our menu list. Starting from a simple bread omelette to fresh vegetable sandwich to fried bread rolls, everything is perfect to taste in their own way. They help if you want to eat a very light and healthy meal or even if you want a rich and heavy meal. It all just depends on the way its made - a little tweak n twist and you can line up recipes

This recipe is a simple toast but heavy to fill you up with a healthy breakfast or perfect evening snack
Serves... 2 ppl
Serve option... Hot with ketchup

This is what u'll need....

Bread - 3 slices
Besan / Gram Flour - 1/4 cup
Onion - 1 small
Mint - little
Coriander leaves - little
Curry leaves - little
Green chilli - 1-2
Asafoetida / Hing - a pinch
Baking powder - 1/4 tspn
Oil - 2 tbspn
Salt to taste

Here is the stir....
  • Wash mint, coriander, curry leaves and green chilly. Roughly chop onion and stash everything into a blender jar
  • Run the blender to give a quick pulse, just a second or two and not more than that. You want a very coarse but blended mixture here. The texture gives a nice bite to the toast. If you make it a puree then you will feel the toast is too heavy with batter and there will be no texture to it. You can also use chopped onions but my elder kiddo has a hatred towards popping-out onions in any dish ;)
  • Take a wide working bowl and put the gram flour in it. Add asafoetida and salt to the flour. Mix everything together with a spoon. If you want to add baking powder then this is the right time but adding this is completely optional
  • Gradually add water to the above dry mixture and whisk it make a smooth and thin mixture. Try keeping the batter a little thinner than dosa batter. Make sure there are no lumps
  • Spoon in the green mixture into the batter and mix it all well till it all nice and smooth

  • Put an iron tawa on stove and let it pick up on medium heat
  • Meanwhile cut each slice diagonally to make 2 triangles. You can again cut each triangle into 2 to make bite sized pieces. I have stopped with just making 2 triangles out of one slice
  • When the tawa is hot pick a piece of bread and dip into so it coats on both sides

  • Pour a tablespoon of oil in the tawa and place the bread slices on it. Some people deep fry this stuff but I prefer pan fried. Idea of deep fried for breakfast kills me so we end up doing the pan fry more always
  • Cook on medium heat till you get a slight brown color. Flip and cook on other side too. Pour a few drops of oil on this side too. If you cook on high heat, the gram flour will stay uncooked
  • Remove from flame and serve hot with ketchup or green chutney

Note:
  • Dont grind the greens to a fine puree so that there is a little bite and texture to the toast
  • Cook on medium heat till done to cook the gram flour completely

    1. Hi, I have been making this for quite a while now but have never had a complaint of it being raw. The simple trick is to cook it on low-medium flame
